The ZPAPM70 uses a semi-automatic, long-stroke gas piston system with a rotating bolt for proven operation. Gas piston operated upper makes clean up after the range easy. Its safety lever incorporates a bolt-hold-open notch for convenient range handling.
The 16-inch barrel is cold hammer forged and chrome lined for durability and ease of maintenance, and it is threaded M14x1 LH for compatible muzzle devices. Sighting is via a protected front post and a tangent rear leaf, maintaining the traditional setup.
The stamped steel receiver measures approximately 1.5 mm and is matched with an RPK-style bulged front trunnion. The top cover is smooth (non-ribbed), and selector markings read SAFE/FIRE. Serial number markings are present on the bolt carrier and the right-side trunnion pad.
Factory and import stamps include "ZASTAVA ARMS USA DES PLAINES IL, MDL. ZPAPM70 CAL 7.62X39MM., ZASTAVA ARMS MADE IN SERBIA." The rifle follows Yugoslav/Serbian-pattern dimensions that differ from standard AKM, which influences parts compatibility with aftermarket components.
