Built on the proven M&P Shield platform, this first-generation .40 S&W model is the no-thumb-safety variant for a simple, streamlined manual of arms. The slide is marked to indicate the pistol can fire with the magazine removed, and the design incorporates S&W's sear-deactivation lever to allow disassembly without pulling the trigger.
The 3.1 inch (3.125 inch) stainless barrel and stainless slide wear a durable black Melonite nitride treatment. Dimensions stay compact with an overall length of about 6.1 inches, a slim width of about 0.95 inch, and an unloaded weight of about 19 oz. Capacity is 7+1, and this example includes both a 6-round and a 7-round factory magazine.
Controls and handling are straightforward with a striker-fired action, a hinged two-piece safety trigger with a positive reset, and wave-style rear cocking serrations. The frame is black polymer with M&P palm-swell texture, and there is no accessory rail to maintain the Shield's streamlined profile. The slide has no front serrations and no optic cut.
Sights are all steel with a 3-dot arrangement: a dovetailed white-dot front and a steel two-dot rear that is drift-adjustable for windage. Both sights are dovetailed into the slide for durability and straightforward replacement if desired.
