The DDI 12 follows the proven AK-pattern layout, built on a stamped and riveted steel receiver with a right-side safety/selector marked S and E. Its operating system is a gas-operated long-stroke piston with a rotating bolt, with the gas tube positioned above the barrel and a right-side charging handle for direct control.
The 18.5 in barrel is paired with open sights: a fiber-optic front post for fast acquisition and an open notch rear. The chamber is cut for 3 in 12 gauge shells.
Controls are AK-style, including a paddle-style magazine release for its detachable box-magazine interface and a manual safety/selector lever. Furniture includes a fixed polymer stock with a 14.0 in length of pull, a polymer pistol grip, and a polymer fore-end/handguard. The matte black finish ties the build together with a utilitarian look.
