Built by James River Armory in Burgaw, North Carolina, this JR-M72B1 follows the Zastava M72 heavy-barrel pattern. The rifle uses a stamped, dimpled AKM-type receiver with a ribbed top cover. The Zastava factory logo with the text "ZASTAVA – KRAGUJEVAC – YUGOSLAVIA" is stamped on the right side of the rear sight block. Yugoslav selector legends "U / R / J" are present on the right side.
The 16.25" heavy-profile barrel includes a finned section behind the gas block for enhanced heat dissipation, consistent with the M72 lineage. It has a threaded muzzle fitted with a short cylindrical slotted device, and a cleaning rod is installed beneath the barrel.
Sighting is via robust iron sights: a protected front sight post and a tangent rear sight that includes the Yugoslav flip-up night element. The exposed bolt carrier is left in the white, adding to the distinctive M72-pattern look.
Operation is via a semi-automatic, long-stroke gas piston system with a rotating bolt. Capacity is 30+1 with the included Magpul PMAG. Wood furniture includes a fixed hardwood stock, an M72-style vented lower handguard, and a wood upper handguard.
