The MAS 49/56 is a semi-automatic, direct-impingement rifle with a rear-locking tilting bolt, chambered in 7.5x54mm French. Capacity is listed at 10+1. The steel receiver, finished in parkerized gray, is marked "MAS Mle 1949-56 CAL. 7.5."
Its 20.5 inch barrel is paired with the model’s signature combination muzzle device, featuring a 22 mm grenade-launcher spigot and a muzzle brake. The gas cutoff valve is housed in the gas block just behind the front sight and is linked to the folding grenade sight. A folding grenade sight and bayonet lug arrangement complete the front-end configuration.
Sighting equipment includes iron sights with a rear aperture on a sliding elevation ramp and a folding grenade sight at the front. A left-side APX-type scope base is factory-installed and affixed to the receiver.
