This first-generation M&P 40 Shield is a micro-size, striker-fired .40 S&W with a 3.1-inch Melonite-treated stainless barrel and slide, factory-spec 6.1-inch overall length, and 19.0 oz weight. It stands out with installed TG-H3 tritium 3-dot night sights featuring an orange-outlined front, rear-only wave/fish-scale slide serrations, and the Shield 1.0 design that preceded the Shield Plus. The slide bears the factory "CAUTION—CAPABLE OF FIRING WITH MAGAZINE REMOVED" marking.

The Gen 1 M&P 40 Shield delivers a slim, single-stack profile with a 7+1 capacity in .40 S&W. Its stainless steel barrel and slide receive a black Melonite (nitride) treatment for surface hardness and corrosion resistance. Inside the polymer frame, an internal steel chassis provides structural support.
The installed TG-H3 tritium sights add low-light capability. The front sight is a green tritium dot with an orange outline for fast acquisition, paired with two green tritium rear dots. Both front and rear are marked TG-H3.
The slide features rear-only wave/fish-scale serrations for purchase, along with the factory "CAUTION—CAPABLE OF FIRING WITH MAGAZINE REMOVED" marking. Controls include a hinged two-piece trigger and standard Shield 1.0 safety systems.
