The rifle has been heavily sporterized and is fitted to a commercial FN Mauser stock. There are widespread scratches and blemishes, with many areas of rust and pitting. The rear sight shows extensive rusting, and the rear sight ladder has been shaved down.

Built at Kokura Arsenal during WWII, this Type 99 Short Rifle shows arsenal and inspection marks along with a kana series mark on the forged steel receiver. It is chambered for 7.7x58mm Japanese and uses an internal 5-round magazine. The 26-inch barrel length matches the Short Rifle pattern.
The rifle has been thoroughly sporterized. It is stocked in a commercial FN Mauser-pattern hardwood stock with a right-hand Monte Carlo cheekpiece, cut checkering on the grip and fore-end, a white-line spacer at the grip cap, and diamond-shaped inlays in the fore-end and butt area. An FN-marked hard-rubber buttplate is fitted, and sling swivels are installed with a leather sling attached.
Sighting equipment is a mixed configuration: an aftermarket ramped front sight with a pinned blade up front, paired with the original military tangent rear sight that retains its folding anti-aircraft wings. The rear sight ladder has been shaved down.
The bolt features a turned-down, polished handle and the standard Type 99 rotating rear safety knob. The bolt is present, fully assembled, and installed; internal spring condition is unknown and function is untested. Despite exterior wear, the bore condition is noted as good with clean rifling and only minor wear.
