The fixed-barrel blowback design with an internal hammer and single-action-only trigger provides a straightforward operating system. The flat-faced trigger with a safety tab, plus an ambidextrous manual thumb safety, delivers a familiar control layout within the M&P series.
Built on a black polymer frame with M&P-style texturing and S&W medallion, the 22X includes an ambidextrous slide stop and a reversible magazine release to suit a wide range of shooters. Capacity is 10+1 rounds, and the pistol weighs approximately 16.32 oz unloaded.
The aluminum-alloy slide is marked "SMITH & WESSON MARYVILLE, TN U.S.A." and carries practical rear serrations. Sight alignment is fast and clear thanks to the green fiber-optic front and a rear sight.
An integral multi-slot MIL-STD-1913 Picatinny dustcover rail supports common accessories. The slide is marked "CAUTION - CAPABLE OF FIRING WITH MAGAZINE REMOVED" along the left side below the ejection port. The 22X also shares magazines with the S&W FPC 22LR carbine, adding useful cross-compatibility for owners of both platforms.
