The Model 642-1 follows the S&W Centennial pattern with an internal, enclosed hammer and double-action-only operation. Its five-shot fluted cylinder and short 1.875-inch barrel keep the package compact while maintaining traditional J-Frame handling.
Construction features include a matte silver aluminum-alloy frame combined with a stainless steel barrel and cylinder, both finished to match. The barrel has a short underlug and a partially shrouded ejector rod for streamlined function.
Sighting is fixed, with a serrated ramp front and a top-strap groove rear. The smooth trigger face supports the DAO mechanism, and there is no internal key-lock port on the frame.
Factory grip panels are black synthetic with S&W logos, fitted to a round-butt J-Frame with the backstrap exposed. Markings include "SMITH & WESSON" and ".38 S&W SPL +P" on the barrel; "Airweight," S&W Trade Mark logos on both sides of the frame, and "SPFLD, MA S&W U.S.A." The yoke cut is stamped with assembly number "595."
