The Mustang XSP uses a locked-breech, short-recoil system in a micro-1911, cocked-and-locked layout. Its single-action-only trigger, manual thumb safety, and firing pin block deliver a familiar control scheme in a compact .380 ACP format.
The slide and 2.75 in barrel are machined from stainless steel bar stock, with the slide finished in stainless. The black polymer frame reduces weight while providing durability, and this model was the first polymer-framed Mustang variant introduced in 2013.
Ergonomics include pebbled grip panels with molded Colt logo and ribbed/dimpled frontstrap and backstrap. Controls feature a left-side circular magazine release, a solid curved trigger, and an exposed ring (rowel) hammer.
Sight picture comes from fixed, dovetailed units: a black post front and a square-notch rear. The slide has rear serrations with no forward serrations. Observed factory markings include 'MUSTANG XSP,' 'COLT 380 AUTO,' and 'CAL .380.'
