This M57 follows the short-recoil, locked-breech, single-action pattern and uses the 7.62x25 Tokarev cartridge. It has a 4.57 inch barrel and a 9+1 capacity, distinguishing it among Tokarev-pattern service pistols.
The pistol is built on a blued steel frame with a blued slide that carries rear-only diagonal serrations. Sights are fixed, with a front blade and a rear notch. Ribbed black phenolic grip panels with Zastava star medallions are lever-locked without grip screws.
Markings include the Yugoslav state crest on the slide top and Yugoslav proof/inspection marks on the barrel hood. The slide bears the import mark "PW ARMS REDMOND WA YUGO ZASTAVA." The slide, frame, and barrel all share matching serial numbers.
Safety features include an import-added manual safety on the left side of the frame with a red paint "fire" dot, as well as a magazine disconnect. A lanyard loop is fitted at the heel, and the included magazine has a lanyard-loop floorplate to match.
