Pre-WWII Suhl Drilling 16 Gauge/9.3x72R, 26 in, Hammerless Boxlock, Color Case Hardened, Factory Engraved
This interwar German drilling is a 1920s–1930s pre-WWII hammerless boxlock likely from Suhl/Zella-Mehlis trade manufacture. It features two 16-gauge shotgun barrels over a 9.3x72R rifle barrel with 26-inch barrels, a color case hardened receiver, and factory light scroll and geometric engraving. German pre-war crown/U proofmarks and matching partial serials across components further support its period-correct, guild-built origins.
Condition
Overall Condition: Fair condition, showing extensive signs of prior use and handling.
Bore Overall Condition: Good - Clean, well-maintained, minor wear marks.
Bore Fouling: Moderate Fouling - Lead or copper fouling with noticeable buildup.
Bore Rifling: Good Rifling - Intact, well-defined lands and grooves.
Specific Condition Notes: The rifle-barrel firing system appears to be missing hardware, and the plunger that engages the rear rifle sight is not present. The shotgun barrels show minor pitting. The firing pins appear to be in good condition. The walnut stock has scuffs, dings, and a few chipped pieces.
What’s Included
- Suhl Drilling triple-barrel combination gun (16 gauge/9.3x72R)
Built in the Suhl/Zella-Mehlis region during the interwar years, this drilling combines German guild craftsmanship with practical field utility. German pre-war proofmarks include crown/U with caliber and bore indications of 9.3x72R, 8.8 m/m, and 72, and matching partial serials are observed across components.
The triple-barrel layout pairs two 16-gauge shotgun barrels over a 9.3x72R rifle barrel. Barrels measure 26 inches and are topped by a matted rib with a pop-up rear leaf and front bead. A Kersten-style double top-bite lockup (paired top lugs/side bites) and a left-side barrel selector provide secure lockup and straightforward barrel selection.
The action is a hammerless boxlock, break-action design with double triggers and a manual tang safety. Sling swivels are installed for carry in the field, and the length of pull measures 14.25 inches for a comfortable, full-size fit.
Stocked in walnut, the gun features a left-side pancake cheekpiece, checkered grips, and a ribbed buttplate. A buttstock cartridge trap adds practical storage, and the splinter forend secures with a Deeley latch.
The receiver is steel with a color case hardened finish, complemented by factory-applied light scroll and geometric engraving on the action, fences, top lever, and rib borders. The overall presentation reflects classic pre-WWII Suhl styling and period execution.
