The 4.0-inch steel barrel is cold hammer-forged and finished with a recessed target crown, a durability-focused feature that supports consistent accuracy. The barrel is non-threaded, matching the standard 509 setup.
The full-size polymer frame is finished in black with molded textured panels and backstrap ribs. It includes an integral Picatinny/MIL-STD-1913 dustcover rail with four slots for mounting compatible accessories.
Controls are fully ambidextrous, with both the slide stop and magazine release operable from either side. The two-piece striker-fired trigger incorporates an integrated safety lever, complemented by internal passive safeties and a trigger safety.
The slide includes front and rear cocking serrations and an external extractor. Sights are fixed iron units: a dovetailed white-dot front post and a drift-adjustable square-notch rear.
Designed from FN’s entry in the U.S. Army MHS program, the 509 platform has an extensive test history. This example is marked “FN COLUMBIA, SC USA,” with “509” and the FN logo on the slide, and it features a serialized plate with a QR matrix on the underside of the dustcover rail. The full-height grip is built for 17-round magazines, providing a 17+1 capacity.
