This no-dash 686 retains the early configuration valued by many S&W enthusiasts: forged hammer and trigger, wide checkered hammer spur, smooth-faced trigger, and no internal lock. The yoke area is properly marked "MOD. 686," and there is no visible "M" recall stamp in the yoke cut.
The 4 inch stainless steel barrel has a full underlug and an ejector rod shroud, offering a balanced profile. The top rib and topstrap are longitudinally serrated to cut glare, complementing the revolver’s satin/matte stainless finish on the frame, cylinder, and receiver.
Sighting equipment includes a red-ramp front and a micrometer-click adjustable rear. The action is double-action/single-action, and the six-chamber fluted cylinder is stainless with a matching matte finish.
Target-style checkered wood grips with S&W medallions provide a solid hold and classic presentation. This U.S.-made revolver represents the early 1980s production era, with the ACU serial prefix aligning with its 1983 manufacture.
