The P238 uses a locked-breech, short-recoil operating system and is configured for single-action-only operation with an external spur hammer. Controls include a push-button magazine release, a manual thumb safety, and a firing pin block. With the included 7-round magazine, capacity is 7+1, and it accepts both 6- and 7-round single-stack magazines.
Construction is lightweight and durable, pairing a black hard-coat anodized aluminum-alloy frame with a matte stainless slide. The slide features rear cocking serrations, and the frame includes a lanyard loop at the rear of the frame/beavertail, directly behind the hammer. Black textured rubber wraparound grips with finger grooves provide a positive hold.
Sights are fixed, with a dovetailed front and a dovetailed, drift-adjustable rear. The barrel length is 2.7 inches, supporting the pistol's compact, micro-size profile.
Markings include slide "SIG SAUER P238," barrel ".380 AUTO," and frame "SIG SAUER INC. EXETER–NH–USA." The two-tone finish is factory, and the box label shows model code 238-380-NBS12 dated 02/18/2014.
