The M249S Para is a gas-operated, piston-driven, closed-bolt semi-automatic rifle built on a stamped-steel receiver with riveted/welded construction. It uses a right-side reciprocating charging handle and maintains the proven layout of the Minimi family in a civilian semi-auto configuration.
Para-specific features include a cold hammer-forged barrel of approximately 16.1 inches, an integral folding bipod near the gas block, and a folding carry handle attached to the barrel shroud. The polymer perforated heat-shield handguard and Para buttstock on dual guide rods provide a compact profile with an adjustable length of pull.
The feeding system retains true dual-feed operation: M27 disintegrating-link belts and STANAG magazines. A hinged top cover with a full-length numbered Picatinny rail, feed tray, and belt-feed pawls is present, along with a belt-port dust cover. This rifle includes a polymer M249 belt box, M27 links, and one 30-round STANAG-pattern magazine.
Sighting equipment consists of iron sights with a protected front post and an adjustable rear sight using a range drum and windage knobs. U.S.-made components show extensive FN America CAGE-coded markings 'MFR 3S679' and an 'M' inspection stamp on the receiver; the Para stock rods are marked '19200 12956152 MFR 3S679'. Overall length is approximately 31.5–37 inches depending on stock position, with an unloaded weight of about 17 lb.
