The Short, Magazine Lee-Enfield rifle was adopted for British service in 1902 and subsequently saw service in both World Wars. The rifle was designed to replace both the rifles issued to the infantry and the carbines which were used by cavalrymen and artillerymen. The SMLE was distinctive in outline, featuring a full stock and a unique nose-cap with prominent sight protecting ears. This rifle is the MkIII* variant, which originated in attempts to speed production during the First World War. As a consequence, it lacks the auxiliary long-range sights and magazine cut-off which the MkIII featured.
By 1939, only a few were being produced - and only by Birmingham Small Arms Ltd.
