Volcanic Repeating Arms Company was founded in the United States in 1855 by Horace Smith and Daniel B. Wesson. The company became insolvent in late 1856 and was reorganized in April 1857 as the New Haven Arms Company, the forerunner of Winchester Repeating Arms. Its enduring legacy is the Volcanic lever-action design using Rocket Ball ammunition, a direct precursor to the Henry rifle and later Winchester lever-action designs.
