Simson & Co. of Germany was founded in 1856 by Löb Simson and Moses Simson. In the mid-1930s the firm was seized and reorganized as Berlin-Suhler Waffen- und Fahrzeugwerke (BSW), then from 1939 operated as Gustloff-Werke; after 1952 firearms from the Suhl works were produced within the state-owned VEB Fahrzeug- und Jagdwaffenwerk "Ernst Thälmann," while the Simson name later survived only for mopeds, ending in 2002. It is best remembered as the sole Weimar-era military-contract producer of the Luger P08.
