The Birmingham Small Arms Company Limited of the United Kingdom was founded in 1861 expressly to build rifles by machinery, grew into a principal maker of British service arms with vast Lee–Enfield output in both world wars, and by 1939 its Small Heath plant was the nation’s only rifle factory.
