Smith & Corona Typewriters, Inc. of the United States entered rifle production during World War II, producing M1903A3 service rifles from late 1942 until February 19, 1944, with about 234,580 built. Within rifles, Smith-Corona pieces are distinguished by receiver markings tied to two serial-number blocks (3,608,000–3,707,999 and 4,708,000–4,992,000), predominantly 4-groove High Standard barrels with a scarce 6-groove run from Savage blanks, blued bolts stamped with an X, many unmarked small parts, and buttplates checkered roughly 10–11 lines per inch.
