The L.C. Smith Gun Company was founded in the United States in 1884 by Lyman Cornelius Smith. The brand no longer operates independently; production continued under Hunter Arms Company in Fulton, New York until 1945 and then under Marlin as the L.C. Smith Gun Company from 1945 to 1950, with limited Marlin reissues in 1969–1971 and later mid-2000s imports. Its enduring legacy is the American-made hammerless sidelock double-barrel shotgun, nicknamed “Elsie,” along with innovations such as the Hunter One-Trigger.
